Chefie

Lunch Meal Delivery App

The Chefie App offers a convenient food delivery service tailored for office workers in Thailand, aged 25-35, who often struggle to find affordable, healthy meals near their offices. With crowded restaurants and limited options, Chefie provides a solution by offering two meal sets, each consisting of a starter, main course, and dessert. Meals are non-customizable, but users can view nutritional information for each set.

Users can subscribe to a weekly or monthly plan, with a discount available for monthly subscribers. Priced at 150 THB per meal, the service is available on weekdays, with orders delivered directly to the office between 8:30 AM and 12:00 PM. Orders must be placed or changed at least 24 hours in advance, and users can pre-select meals for the upcoming week by Sunday night.

This quick case study is part of my job interview assignment, though the content has been adjusted.

Competitive investigations

Before diving deep into the project, I spent a few hours investigating a few competitors and meal delivery subscription models that I wasn’t familiar with.

I discovered some good implementations that I can learn from and also identified areas that need improvement and should be taken into consideration.

  • Similar business model to ours
  • Branding on their website exhibits some characteristic features
  • Don’t have a native app
  • Can order meals online through a third-party website (White label marketplace), but only during their business hours
  • Online subscription registration is available through a separate LINE app
  • Focus on offering a customizable menu (Create your Own)

  • Have wide selection of menu options
  • Don’t offer a subscription package, but allow customers to place orders for multiple delivery dates at once, which provides greater flexibility.
  • Online ordering is simple and straightforward.
  • Build your Own section is implemented nicely.

  • Similar business model to ours
  • Menu selection for each day of the week is conveniently presented on a single page
  • Use Buy Credit model
  • Lack of helpful information on the website

Takeaways

  • I couldn’t seem to find any meal subscription service in Thailand that is fully implemented on a dedicated app without relying on third-party chat services like LINE.
  • The app/website architecture really depends on how the company defines its subscription model and how complex it is, as well as how customers are billed.
  • For this test, I designed a main user flow with core functionalities (registration, ordering, subscription and meal modification) that would be a good start for Chefie meal delivery service.

Wireframes

Given the limited time I have, I quickly sketched some paper wireframes of the main screens and then jumped right into the visual design and hi-fi mockups on Figma.
